The Honorable Stacy Ritter, Mayor of Broward County (FL), has proclaimed May 2009 as ELECTROMAGNETIC SENSITIVITY(EMS) AWARENESS MONTH in Broward County (FL). The Honorable Mayor Stacy Ritter states in the Proclamation, that as a result of global electromagnetic pollution, people of all ages in Broward County and throughout the world have developed an illness known as Electromagnetic Sensitivity (EMS) and that EMS is a painful chronic condition of hypersensitivity reactions to electromagnetic radiation in the environment for which there is currently no known cure, and that the symptoms of EMS include dermal changes, dermatitis, acute tingling and numbness. muscular weakness, headaches, heart rate changes, nausea, gastric problems, loss of visual acuity, severe neurological, respiratory, speech problems, and numerous other physiological symptoms.The mayor also states that EMS is recognized by the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the U.S. Access Board, and that the health of the general population is at risk from electromagnetic exposures that can lead to this illness induced by electromagnetic radiations, and that this illness may be preventable though the reduction or avoidance of electromagnetic radiation, in both indoor and outdoor environments and further scientific research to be conducted including genetics,

She also points out in the Proclamation, that people with EMS need the support of the medical establishment, and the understanding of family, friends, co-workers and society as they struggle with their illness and learn to adapt to new lifestyles.Electromagnetic Sensitivity (EMS) is a most devastating worldwide epidemic, the direct consequence of global exposures to electromagnetic radiation from cell phones, cell phones towers, telephones, portable phones, Wifi, laptops, computers, videogames, televisions screen, radios, car electronics, pagers, audio and video recorders, power lines, digital cameras, electric clocks and watches, marine radars and radio transmitters, VDU and countless other electronics.

Membrane leakage
All the living cells in our bodies are surrounded by membranes just two molecules thick. Most of these molecules are negatively charged and tend to repel one another. However, they are held together by positive ions (mainly calcium) that fit in between them. The ions’ forces of attraction for the negative molecules on either side help to bind them together like mortar holding together the bricks of a wall.
Extremely weak alternating electromagnetic fields, similar to those produced by Wifi, cell phones, cordless phones, and their respective base stations, can act on these calcium ions and dislodge them. This weakens the membrane and makes it more inclined to leak. Very little energy is required since the calcium has to be moved only far enough from the membrane for an alternative ion (usually potassium) to sneak into its place. Since potassium (with only one positive charge) is less good than calcium (which has two charges) at holding the membrane together, it still leaks.
Effects on fertility and cancer
This leakage can have all sorts of unwanted biological effects totally unconnected with their so-called thermal effects. These include allowing foreign materials, such as toxins, carcinogens and allergens to enter cells more easily. Also, the leakage of digestive enzymes through their internal membranes can damage the DNA, leading to the formation of genetically aberrant cells. When this occurs in the sex organs, there is a loss of fertility. Also, genetically damaged cells in any part of the body can be carcinogenic, although this may not become evident until later on in life when the natural ability of the immune system to deal with them deteriorates.
Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS)
All of us are electrosensitive to some degree, but some more so than others. This too seems to be due to membrane leakage. The precise effects depend on which cells leak and the source of the radiation.
When the cells of the skin leak, it causes inflammation. When our sensory cells leak, it can make them send false signals to the brain, so we may get sensations of heat, burning, pins and needles, etc.
If the cells of the inner ear leak, we can get false sensations of sound (tinnitus) or our sense of balance is affected so we feel dizzy and may get all the symptoms of motion sickness.
When neurons in the brain leak, they become more inclined to transmit nerve impulses. This makes the brain hyperactive so that it is more difficult to get to sleep and we may get stress headaches.
Another effect of brain hyperactivity is to speed our reaction times to outside stimulation. However, because some of the nerve impulses are false, it tends also to cloud our thinking; we lose concentration and become more easily distracted.
This may cause attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. In adults, it may be partly responsible for the increased accident rate when people use cell phones while driving. You are four times more likely to have an accident, even with hands-free types.
On the whole, the body sees these effects as harmful and does what it can to minimise them, but the best solution is to avoid the radiation.
Some of the symptoms may be the body’s way of telling us to do just that. We become sensitised to the radiation, just as a wound remains tender (i.e. more sensitive to pain) for some time after an injury. This forces us to protect it from further damage while it is healing. In the case of EHS, it may not be easy to escape the radiation and the symptoms continue. The consolation is that these symptoms are not life-threatening; they do go away when you remove the source of radiation and, if there is no further exposure, you may gradually become desensitised.

Low energy bulbs and dirty electricity

We are seeing a dramatic increase in illness reported by people after the installation of low energy bulbs (CFL’s) in their home or office environment and now many GPs agree there does seem to be a connection between CFL’s and certain illnesses. This relatively new technology we know from our electro pulse filter research and development program creates dirty electricity like nothing else and this would seem to be still further evidence to support the dramatic linkage being made in the States by Havas, Stetzer and Millham, et al with exponential climbs in diabetes, autism, ADHD and even cancer and ever dirtier electricity.

Mainstream media is focusing on the mercury danger from broken bulbs and attributing sudden illness after CFL installation to the ultra violet light or mercury exposure, even though the vast majority have yet to break or dispose of a CFL and therefore experience any exposure to mercury from this source.


In our opinion it would seem clear that people are actually responding adversely to the increased levels of dirty electricity created by these bulbs.

Fluorescent lamps will only run on an alternating current. They also need a pulse of high voltage and heated filaments at either end to start the electrical discharge to illuminate them. After that, the current must be limited externally, otherwise too much would flow causing the lamp to burn out. In a traditional fluorescent strip light, this is accomplished by the starter switch and the choke (a coil of wire wound around an iron core).



Once started, the current flows through the tube as a smooth sine wave at mains frequency, which is 50 Hz (50 cycles per second) in Europe and 60 Hz in America. This makes the light flash on and off with each half cycle (i.e. 100 or 120 times a second) and some people, such as epileptics and migraine sufferers find this disturbing.

However, almost all CFLs use electronic control gear. This usually incorporates a switched-mode power supply in the base of the lamp itself. It rectifies the AC from the mains to convert it to DC and then chops it electronically into a series of sharp rectangular alternating pulses, which then light the lamp. However, the new frequency, which is usually about 40 kHz (40,000 cycles per second), is so high and the gaps between pulses are so short that the relatively slow response of the phosphors can fill them easily. Consequently, these lamps do not flash.
Biological effects
Despite the absence of flashing, many people have reported ill effects when using CFLs. Typical symptoms include dizziness, nausea, tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears), headaches and various skin disorders. In particular, many migraine and epilepsy sufferers have found that they aggravate their conditions

The effects may be due to pulsed electromagnetic radiation.
The symptoms of exposure to CFL radiation are remarkably similar to those reported by electrosensitive individuals when exposed to pulsed electromagnetic fields. Since the lamps do not flash, it seems probable that they are a direct effect of the pulsed radiation on the brain and nervous system. The magnetic component of the radiation is the more dangerous because it can penetrate deep into the human body where it generates electrical voltages proportional to its rate of change. The rapid rise and fall times of these magnetic pulses can therefore give relatively massive and potentially damaging voltage spikes both in living cells and across their membranes.

Contamination of the mains
Poor quality CFLs often allow these pulses to leak back into the mains wiring to contribute to “dirty electricity” and increase the range of their effects to neighbouring rooms or houses. You should be able to detect these by holding a portable radio tuned between stations on an AM band near the wiring. This is because pulses, by their very nature, also contain harmonics (multiples of the original frequency) that can extend well into the radio frequency spectrum. If you hear a buzzing sound from the set, it means that pulses are leaking into the mains and you should replace the offending lamp by another of better quality.


Contamination of the mains to give “dirty electricity” can come from many sources, not just CFLs. Measurements made by David Stetzer in the library of an American school showed it to consist of hundreds of sharp spikes that could be up to hundreds of millivolts high, superimposed on each cycle of the 120 volt mains supply. Although the largest of them was
only a tiny fraction of the overall mains voltage, their rapid rise and fall times give them biological activity. The sharp magnetic spikes they generate penetrate living tissue easily, where their sudden changes in field-strength induce large voltage spikes.

Several studies by Dr Magda Havas of Trent University in Canada and various co-workers have shown that simply removing these spikes from the mains with “Graham/Stetzer” filters has resulted in improvements in the health, learning ability and behaviour of schoolchildren, reductions in the insulin needed to treat diabetics and an alleviation of the symptoms of electrosensitivity.

Wifi in school should be stopped, say teachers
The use of wireless internet in schools should be suspended amid claims children may be exposed to health risks, according to teachers.

They said schools should "stick to wired computers" until it can be proved networks do not cause cancer or sterility.
The Association of Teachers and Lecturers, which represents more than 160,000 staff, called for a major investigation into the biological and thermal effects of wi-fi.
It follows the installation of wireless internet systems in almost three-quarters of secondary schools and half of primaries across the UK.
At the ATL's annual conference in Liverpool, teachers backed calls for curbs on the use of wi-fi until health risks have been properly assessed.
Colin Kinney, a teacher from Cookstown High School, Northern Ireland, said: "Have we the right to avoid the moral warnings simply for access to a few more computers? Are our pupils going to thank us in the years to come if they have become sterile or suffer from cancer, brought on by or exacerbated by the exposure to wi-fi?
"Perhaps they would just be eternally grateful that we enabled them to finish their power point presentation for geography.
"Should we force our pupils to use it without long-term safety studies being carried out? I don't believe we should."
The union backed calls for a Government investigation into the "considerable biological and thermal effects" and for the results to be made public.
Wi-fi works by transmitting information via radio waves from a telephone line to a computer and back.
Becta, the Government's education technology agency, says it does not actively promote use of the technology but insists it can "complement" a school's wired network.
Almost 14,500 schools are believed to have installed the systems. Whole towns have also been contacted, with Norwich already a "wi-fi city".
Current guidance from the Health Protection Agency suggests there is "no consistent evidence of health effects" from wi-fi equipment.
But its chairman, Sir William Stewart, broke ranks two years ago by saying there should be a review of the health effects amid fears they could pose even greater dangers than mobile phone masts
Mr Kinney told the conference: "Let's stick to wired computers and other wired devices for the time being.
"Okay, so teachers may have to wait a little longer for their IT suite to become available but at least we will be safeguarding health.
"Let's ask for an independent investigation taking into consideration the biological as well as thermal effects of wi-fi and for the results to be made public."
